Facial

What is a Facial?

A facial is a spa treatment that focuses on improving the condition of the skin on the face and neck. Depending on the persons concerns a facial can help improve the appearance of lines, help remove blackheads and whiteheads that can effect some individuals, or improve the texture or reduce redness.

What happens during a Facial treatment?

During a facial treatment you will be asked to remove the top half clothing or place bra straps down to ensure no products damage clothing. You will then be asked if you would like to put on a towel wrap and a head band to protect your hair.

You will lie in a semi-reclined position with a blanket over you. Depending on the treatment you have chosen the therapist will first perform a double cleanse to ensure all make up is removed and the skin is left completely clean.

The therapist will then shine a light to closely inspect the condition of your skin to decide what products would be best suited for your skin.

If suitable you will then have an exfoliation treatment to remove the top layers of dead skin cells to reveal a brighter appearance and enable the rest of the products used to absorb deeper so that they fully benefit the skin.

Depending on your skin type or health conditions the therapist will carry out a towel steam or an OZONE steam. Steaming the skin can help deep cleanse the skin, help remove toxins, and improve circulation to help improve aging skin.

A suitable mask will be chosen specific to your skin type to best improve the condition of the skin and any concerns you may have.

A massage will also be performed to deep cleanse the skin, improve circulation and ease aches, pains and tension areas in the face, neck and shoulder.

The treatment will finish with moisturiser to help rehydrate the skin, followed by eye cream and lip balm to finish.

Can anyone have Facial?

It is very safe to have a traditional facial, however, there are certain reasons why caution should be adopted and you may have to wait until it is safe to continue.

If you suffer from impetigo, cold sores, fungal infection, conjunctivitis, infectious skin condition, have recent scar tissue, cuts of bruising in the area being treated, have suffered past skin allergies to products used, or have a stye you will need to wait until they are treated.

If you have had recent skin peels, microdermabrasion treatments, plastic surgery, semi-permanent make up, botox, lip or facial fillers, or facial piercings or tattoos you will need to wait the advised length of time before treatment can be performed.

Certain precautions will need to be adopted for those that may suffer from diabetes or epilepsy.

If you have used steroid creams, topical or oral retinoids you will be required to be off these for at least 6 months before a treatment can be carried out.

Those that suffer from Claustrophobia, Vascular Skin Disorder, Rosacea, Respiratory Problems, Dilated Capillaries, Reduced Sensitivity, or those that are Pregnant are not suitable for Ozone Steam treatment and so a towel steam will be advised as an alternative.

What are the possible side effects following a facial?

From a facial treatment you may find that your skin purges, but this is a good sign that your skin is ridding itself of all the toxins in the pores, and is only temporary.

You may also have a blushed appearance a few hours following a facial. This is nothing to be concerned about and is due to the increase in blood flow and the fact the face has been worked thoroughly.

Should this redness extend to inflammation, burning sensation, swelling, oozing, itchy etc remove all products on the face and neck and apply a cooling solution, like Aloe Vera. If you have any concerns please get in touch with myself or consult your doctor for further advice.

What should I do at home after my treatment?

–       Avoid wearing make-up for at least 6 hours after a facial.

–       Ensure you always cleanse, tone and moisturize and remove all traces of make-up at the end of the day.

–       Drink plenty of water to remove toxins from the skin and to keep it supple and hydrated.

–       Avoid sun-bathing or any heat treatments after your facial for 12-48 hours after treatment.

–       For long term results use the prescribed products for homecare and return for treatments every 4 weeks to maintain results.

–       Always use an SPF.

How often should I have a Facial?

It is recommended to have a facial about every three to four weeks. That’s how long it takes for your skin to move through the full life cycle of skin cell growth and exfoliation. A facial can help that process along. The treatment will keep your skin clean, clear, and toned. Having one every three to four weeks helps you maintain that beautiful glow all month long.

If, however you experience frequent breakouts or tend to have oilier skin, having a facial more often is recommended during acne flares. Come in every two weeks to clear the skin and bring it to a healthier place. As the skin calms down and the acne goes away, the period of time between facials can be stretched back out.
